Going into his senior year, diving ace Dan Young had three All-America certificates tucked away. Finishing strong, he captured the ultimate prize in 1-meter diving at the 1983 NCAA Division III Championships in Canton, Ohio.
Young captured the national title by accumulating 420.80 points in 11 dives and also added his fifth All-America designation off the three-meter board.
A graduate of Erie’s Academy High School, he first earned All-America honors in the 1-meter events as a sophomore by finishing fifth. As a junior, he collected two more All-American citations for his 1- and 3-meter performances at the national championships.
An often witty and practical joker, Dan helped the Wolverines accumulate a 39-9 dual-meet record, including a 12-0 season in his junior year, under head coach Jim Longnecker. The tri-captain received the Dick Jewell Most Valuable Performer award in his senior year after being the team’s high scorer at the NCAA Championships.
Young graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1983 and in 1986, he earned a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Logan Chiropractic College. In 1991, the College inducted him into its Men’s Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame.
