Four earn conference honors Monday

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Presidents' Athletic Conference recognized four Grove City athletes as Players of the Week in their respective sports Monday afternoon.

The Grove City men's soccer team produced a pair of honorees as senior forward Ryan Merrick (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) earned Offensive Player of the Week while senior defender Jake Kimmich (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Region) captured Defensive Player of the Week.

Senior midfielder Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) earned Offensive Player of the Week in women's soccer and senior middle blocker Kendra Klusch (Alliance, Ohio/Homeschooled) secured Defensive Player of the Week distinction in women's volleyball.

Merrick scored three times last week for the Wolverines as they opened the season 1-0-2 at home. He scored both Grove City goals Friday evening in a 2-0 win over visiting Baldwin Wallace at Don Lyle Field. The next evening, Merrick scored in Grove City's 2-2 home draw with perennial power Calvin. He currently leads the conference with three goals and six points.

Kimmich's work at center back helped Grove City record a pair of shutouts last week. Grove City opened the season with a 0-0 draw against visiting Carnegie Mellon last Tuesday. The Wolverines then blanked Baldwin Wallace, 2-0, Friday night.

In Saturday's tie with Calvin, the Knights' first goal came on a penalty kick. Kimmich is in his third season of helping anchor Grove City's backline as a starter.

Stevenson scored seven goals and added two assists for a 16-point week as Grove City opened the season 2-0-1. She had a hat trick and an assist last Tuesday night in a 4-4 draw at Penn State Behrend. Stevenson then scored two goals each in home wins over Lycoming and Mount Aloysius last Friday and Saturday at Don Lyle Field.

Stevenson is now tied for fourth in program history with 41 career goals and ranks sixth with 88 career points.

Klusch helped the Wolverines to a 5-0 week as she averaged 1.21 blocks, 1.79 kills and 1.07 digs per set while hitting .328. Klusch recorded totaled 17 blocks on the week, highlighted by seven solo blocks Saturday in a sweep of R.I.T. at the Saint Vincent Bearcat Challenge. Klusch also recorded four blocks against both La Roche and Penn State Behrend.

The men's soccer team concludes its season-opening four-match homestand Wednesday at 7 p.m. when Penn State Behrend visits Don Lyle Field. The women's soccer team heads to Carnegie Mellon that same evening. Tuesday night, the volleyball team travels to Muskingum for a 6:30 p.m. non-conference tilt.
