NORTON, Mass. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team earned a 16-13 win Friday afternoon over third-seeded Washington & Jefferson in the quarterfinals of the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships, hosted this weekend by Wheaton (Mass.) College.
The win sends Grove City, the No. 6 seed, into Saturday's semifinals. Grove City will play No. 2 Macalester, which picked up an 11-6 win over seventh-seeded Connecticut College earlier Friday.
Sophomore
Frances Baksa (Longwood, Fla./Lake Mary) helped pace the Wolverines' attack by firing in five goals while junior
Shastyn Tihansky (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) pumped in four goals.
Senior
Kiley Sill (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne), sophomore
Emma Strahorn (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn) and freshman
Emily Addison (Eads, Tenn./Faith Heritage Christian) all scored twice for Grove City. Freshman
Amelia Hervey (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) added a goal in Friday's triumph.
Strahorn recorded a game-high five assists while Addison and Tihansky both tallied a pair of assists. Baksa, Sill and senior
Candace Scalise (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) all had an assist.
Tihansky led Grove City's defense with three steals. In goal, senior
Lea Steen (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) made six saves to earn the win.
Friday's game marked the third meeting of the season between Grove City and W&J. W&J earned an 18-17 triple-overtime home win February 22 over the Wolverines. W&J then slipped past Grove City, 13-11, March 6 at Grove City.
Saturday's 1 p.m. clash with Macalester will also be the third meeting between the Scots and Wolverines this spring. Macalester defeated visiting Grove City in the season opener, 21-7, on Valentine's Day. The teams then met again March 15 in Kenosha, Wis., with Macalester pulling out a 12-10 win.
