GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Presidents' Athletic Conference honored four Grove City College athletes Monday afternoon with weekly honors in recognition of their recent performances.
The Grove City men's lacrosse team earned a pair of awards as senior defender
Sam Stevenson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) captured Defensive Player of the Week while freshman midfielder
Caden Ryan (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) received Newcomer of the Week.
Grove City swept the Player of the Week awards in men's and women's basketball. Senior guard
Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) earned the award in men's basketball while senior center
Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) merited the honor on the women's side.
Stevenson played a major role in Grove City's 14-13 overtime home win Saturday over No. 19 Ohio Wesleyan at Robert E. Thorn Field. He caused three turnovers, collected four ground balls and scored a goal against the Battling Bishops.
He also tallied a caused turnover and a goal February 6 against Salisbury in the season opener in Towson, Md.
Ryan posted a goal and two assists Saturday in his collegiate debut. He assisted on Grove City's first goal and then tallied the Wolverines' second goal, which helped Grove City charge out to a 5-1 lead.
Randle averaged 26.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 66 percent (19 of 29) from the field in a 2-0 week for Grove City. Randle went 14 of 22 (64 percent) on three-point goals, along with going 5 for 7 inside the three-point line.
Saturday, Randle scored a career-high 32 points and added eight rebounds in a 94-73 win over Waynesburg at the Grove City College Arena. He tied Grove City's single-game record by draining eight three-point goals. Last Wednesday, Randle went 6 for 6 from behind the three-point line while recording 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 77-65 win over Allegheny.
Sherrerd helped Grove City take sole possession first place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference's North Division by averaging 17.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in two home wins.
Last Wednesday, she posted 19 points and 12 rebounds in a 64-54 win over Allegheny. She followed with her second double-double of the week with 15 points and 10 rebounds Saturday in a 75-46 win over Waynesburg.
This is the first conference honor this year for all four athletes.
The Grove City men's lacrosse team will open its conference schedule Tuesday at 5 p.m. against visiting Franciscan. The basketball teams visit Westminster in North Division play Wednesday. The women's game tips off at 5:30 p.m., with the men to follow at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Field House.
