Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) and junior center
Austin Johncour (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) both recorded double-doubles Saturday afternoon to help the Grove City College men's basketball team cap the regular season with a 62-50 road victory over Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference North Division action at Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia.
Christenson tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds while Johncour scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting and also pulled down 10 rebounds for the Wolverines, who earned the North Division's third seed in next week's eight-team conference tournament.Â
Grove City seized control of the game with a 12-2 run in the first half. Sophomore forward
Anderson Skelton (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) sparked the run with a dunk that gave Grove City a 26-18 lead.Â
Johncour scored in the pain and senior guard
Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) followed with two free throws. Four Christenson foul shots and a layup by junior guard
Colton Martin (Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg) extended the lead to 36-20.
Grove City (11-14, 8-8) led 38-22 at halftime.Â
Another Skelton dunk and a Christenson three-pointer boosted the lead to 54-32 with 11 minutes left. Martin gave the Wolverines their largest lead, 58-34, with a layup at the 8:54 mark.Â
Grove City shot 23 of 60 (38 percent) from the field. Thiel finished 19 of 54 (35 percent) for the afternoon. Grove City owned a 45-34 rebound advantage. The Wolverines had 18 offensive rebounds while Thiel totaled 22 defensive rebounds.Â
The Wolverines had nine turnovers. Thiel turned over the ball 11 times. Kenny Ermat and Das Sanders each led the Tomcats (6-18, 3-13) with 13 points.Â
Grove City will face Chatham (17-7, 12-4) in the conference tournament quarterfinals Tuesday at 7 p.m. Chatham tied for first in the South Division, but ended up second after a three-way tiebreaker with Washington & Jefferson and Franciscan. The Cougars pulled out a 67-61 home win over Grove City in the teams' lone meeting January 17.
