ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team opened the 2025 season Saturday by splitting two matches at Mercyhurst University's Curtis Robinette Memorial tournament in Hagerty Family Events Center. The Wolverines opened the day a 15-12 setback to Washington & Jefferson. However, Grove City rebounded for a 16-13 triumph over Penn State Behrend.
Five Grove City players produced multi-goal performances against Penn State Behrend. Freshman
Frances Baksa (Longwood, Fla./Lake Mary) fired in five goals to help pace the Wolverines while sophomore
Shastyn Tihansky (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) pumped in four goals.
Junior
Kiley Sill (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) scored three times while senior
Riley McCullough (Spring, Texas/Oak Ridge) and freshman
Zoe Luttrell (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) both scored twice.
McCullough and Sill both assisted four goals while Tihansky and senior
Kamryn Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) had two assists. Baksa, senior
Sam Logue (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) and senior
Mikayla Zablocki (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) all chalked up an assists.
Luttrell led the defense with five steals. Baksa recorded four steals while McCullough and Sill had three thefts. Junior goalie
Lea Steen (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) made 11 saves to earn the win in goal.
Zablocki and Tihansky both scored three times against W&J while Kerr and McCullough scored twice apiece. Sill, Logue and junior
Candace Scalise (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) all had goals.
Sill recorded four assists while Luttrell and Tihansky had two assists. Kerr and McCullough each assisted goals.
Steen stopped six shots. She also had two steals.
Grove City will compete in the second day of the weekend tournament at Mercyhurst, starting with a 12 p.m. tilt with Gannon. The Wolverines then conclude the tournament with a 3 p.m. match against Mercyhurst.
