GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team concluded the 2019 regular season Saturday afternoon with an 11-8 setback against Wittenberg in Collegiate Water Polo Association inter-divisional action at James E. Longnecker Pool.
Senior
Abby Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led the Grove City attack by scoring three times while sophomore
Tessa Leatherwood (Hurst, Texas/Colleyville Covenant) added two goals. Senior
Heidi Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian), freshman
Sophia Melanson (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and freshman
Elaine Miller (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) also scored for the Wolverines (9-7).
Schmidt assisted three goals, giving her a team-high 33 assists on the season. Junior
Elizabeth Andrews (Newberg, Ore./Veritas) tallied two assists while sophomore goalie
Alexa Dunn (Girard, Pa./Girard) had one assist.
Defensively, Andrews, Dunn and Miller all recorded three steals. Dunn stopped six shots.Â
Prior to the game, Grove City honored Schmidt, Spicher and senior
Jillian Breckenridge (Dunellen, N.J./Dunellen) as part of Senior Day activities.
Grove City is a member of the CWPA Division III Eastern Division while Wittenberg plays in the Western Division. The teams could meet again next weekend at the CWPA Division III Championships, which will be hosted by Connecticut College in New London, Conn.
Grove City will play Friday night at 7:15 p.m. in the quarterfinals against either Carthage or Utica. Those teams will play a pigtail match Friday morning.
