NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Twice during the 2019 regular season, the Grove City College women's water polo team dropped narrow decisions to Wittenberg. The Wolverines fell to Wittenberg, 11-9, in the season's opening weekend February 23, then took an 11-8 home setback to Wittenberg eight days ago.
Sunday, Grove City turned the tables on the Tigers as the Wolverines earned an 11-9 win over Wittenberg in the fifth place match at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships, hosted by Connecticut College. The Wolverines conclude the season with an 11-8 record, their best mark since 2012.Â
A balanced offensive attack carried Grove City in Sunday's win as five players scored multiple goals. Junior
Elizabeth Andrews (Newberg, Ore./Veritas) scored three times while senior
Heidi Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian), senior
Abby Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell), sophomore
Tessa Leatherwood (Hurst, Texas/Colleyville Covenant) and freshman
Elaine Miller (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) all scored twice.Â
Schmidt also assisted four goals while Andrews, Leatherwood, Miller and Spicher each assisted one goal.
Leatherwood led the defense with six steals while Andrews had four thefts. Spicher added three steals. In goal, sophomore
Alexa Dunn (Girard, Pa./Girard) stopped five shots to earn her 11th win of the season.Â
Grove City will lose Schmidt, Spicher and senior
Jillian Breckenridge (Dunellen, N.J./Dunellen) to graduation.
