CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team concluded its trip to the Claremont Convergence by dropping a pair of matches against California powerhouses Saturday. Grove City opened the day with a 12-9 setback to Chapman. The Wolverines then fell to Occidental, 9-6, in Saturday's nightcap.
Freshman
Elaine Miller (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) paced Grove City in the opener with four goals while sophomore
Tessa Leatherwood (Hurst, Texas/Colleyville Covenant) scored three times. Junior
Elizabeth Andrews (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) and freshman
Sophia Melanson (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) also scored for the Wolverines.
Andrews and senior
Abby Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both recorded two assists. Leatherwood and senior
Heidi Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian) both assisted one goal each. Spicher led the defense with four steals. In goal, sophomore
Alexa Dunn (Girard, Pa./Girard) stopped three shots. She also recorded an assist.Â
Andrews tossed in three goals in Saturday's nightcap against Occidental. Leatherwood scored a pair of goals and Miller added a score. Leatherwood and Schmidt each assisted two goals while Andrews and Miller both recorded one assist.Â
Leatherwood recorded four steals while Melanson and Miller each had two steals. Dunn stopped seven shots.Â
Grove City will open Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III play next Saturday with a pair of matches at Washington & Jefferson. The Wolverines will play W&J at 11 a.m., then meet Utica at 2:30 p.m.
