WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's water polo team improved to 4-0 in Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III conference play Sunday by sweeping a pair of matches at Washington & Jefferson College. Grove City opened the day with a 17-11 victory Sunday morning over Connecticut College. The Wolverines then rolled past western Pennsylvania rival Penn State Behrend in Sunday's second bout, 16-9.
Grove City stormed out to a 6-2 lead after one quarter in the win over Connecticut. Junior
Elizabeth Andrews (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) fired in six goals for the Wolverines while sophomore
Tessa Leatherwood (Hurst, Texas/Colleyville Covenant) and freshman
Elaine Miller (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) each scored four times.
Freshman
Sophia Melanson (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored twice and senior
Abby Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added a goal.
Senior
Heidi Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian) assisted a team-high four goals. Andrews and Leatherwood both had three assists while Miller and Spicher each assisted two goals. Melanson and junior
Haley Jennings (Somers, Conn./East Catholic) also had assists.
Leatherwood recorded five steals while Spicher blocked two shots. In goal, sophomore
Alexa Dunn (Girard, Pa./Girard) stopped 10 shots to earn the victory.
The Wolverines also posted six goals in the first quarter against Behrend, charging out to a 6-1 lead. Leatherwood pumped in seven goals while Andrews and Melanson both scored three times. Miller scored a pair of goals and sophomore
Alliefair Scalise (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) also scored.
Miller assisted three goals while Andrews, Melanson and Schmidt all had two assists. Leatherwood, Spicher and freshman
Kyra Johnson (Hamilton, Va.) all had one assist.
Dunn recorded a team-high five steals in goal. She also stopped eight shots. Andrews tallied four steals while Johnson, Leatherwood and Spicher each had three thefts.
Saturday, Grove City earned wins over W&J (18-9) and Utica (20-6) to open league play. It is Grove City's first 4-0 start in conference play since 2013.
The Wolverines return to action March 22 with home games against W&J and Utica in conference play.
