Box Score 4 LITTLE RIVER, S.C. -- The Grove City College softball team concluded its eight-game Spring Break trip to the Myrtle Beach area Friday with a pair of 8-0 wins over Columbia (S.C.) and Hilbert. Two days prior, Grove City (6-2) earned a 3-1 win over Chestnut Hill and dropped a 6-5 verdict to Wilson.
Friday against Columbia, Grove City broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the fourth inning and then invoked the mercy rule after five innings by scoring five more runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Freshman shortstop
Cora Myers (Blanchard, Pa./Central Mountain) opened the scoring by doubling in junior left fielder
Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland). Myers and senior center fielder
Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) then scored when junior pitcher
Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) cracked a two-run single.
Freshman DP
Zoey Lindner (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) pushed the lead to 4-0 when her sacrifice fly scored freshman pinch runner
Zoie Bhat (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany).
Anthony singled in Montone in the fifth inning, then came home on a single from sophomore third baseman
Sydney Shay (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg). Myers scored on a base hit by senior catcher
Kristin Tesch (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley). Meadors scored the fourth run of the inning when freshman first baseman
Erin Timmes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) walked with the bases loaded.
Montone tripled for Grove City while Anthony finished 2 for 3.
Meadors allowed three hits in five innings to earn the victory. She did not walk a batter and struck out three.
Sophomore pitcher
Alivia Lantzy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) fired a two-hit shutout against Hilbert to earn her second win of the trip. Lantzy (2-1) struck out eight and did not walk a batter.
Montone went 3 for 3 with a double and three runs scored. Lantzy and sophomore
Ellie Day (New Marshfield, Ohio/Alexander) both doubled. Anthony, Lindner, Meadors and freshman catcher
Lily Meidl (Pataskala, Ohio/Licking Heights) all had two hits each.
Lindner singled in Lantzy to give Grove City a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Montone's double scored Meidl in the second inning as Grove City extended its lead to 5-0.
Junior first baseman
Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) went 3 for 3 Wednesday in the Wolverines' 3-1 victory over Chestnut Hill. Myers and Montone both went 2 for 3.
Lantzy doubled in Lindner and Montone in the third inning to give Grove City a 2-0 lead. Chestnut Hill cut the lead in half in the fourth inning but Grove City reclaimed a two-run lead when Myers singled in Jackson.
Meadors earned the pitching win by striking out seven batters in six innings. Lantzy recorded the save by pitching a perfect seventh inning.
Grove City suffered its first setback of the season in Wednesday's nightcap against Wilson. Lindner's tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh scored Lantzy. A Grove City error in the bottom of the seventh scored the tying and winning runs for Wilson, however.
Lantzy and Tesch both doubled for Grove City. Anthony, Meidl and Tesch all went 2 for 3.
Lantzy struck out eight batters in 6 1/3 innings. She allowed four earned runs, absorbing the defeat.
Grove City will open the northern portion of the schedule Thursday, March 12 at Mount Aloysius. The doubleheader will start at 3 p.m.
