GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team improved to 9-8 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by sweeping a home doubleheader Saturday from Franciscan at College Field. Grove City (17-10) won the opener, 17-0, then secured an 11-3 victory in the nightcap. Both games went five innings.
Grove City bolted to an 11-0 lead in the first inning of the opener as the Wolverines combined eight hits and seven errors in the outburst. Grove City added three more runs in the second inning and another three-inning burst ni the fourth inning.
Freshman first baseman
Cora Myers (Blanchard, Pa./Central Mountain) helped pace the Wolverines' 16-hit attack by recording a triple, double and single in three at bats. Junior DP
Alexis Jackson (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) went 3 for 4 with a double while senior center fielder
Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) doubled, singled and scored three runs.
Junior left fielder
Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) laced a two-run triple while freshman shortstop
Lily Meidl (Pataskala, Ohio/Licking Heights) went 2 for 2 with two runs scored.Â
Junior pitcher
Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio/Champion) singled, scored twice and knocked in two runs. Sophomore
Elena Tylka (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) added a pinch-hit run-scoring single.
Meadors earned the shutout win by throwing a two-hitter. She struck out seven batters.Â
The Wolverines scored three first-inning runs in the nightcap, then broke open the game with an eight-run rally in the next frame. Myers sparked the inning with a two-run double that plated Montone and freshman third baseman
Emma Vok (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek).
Senior DP
Kristin Tesch (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) followed with a single that brought home Jackson and Myers. Later in the inning, Montone's three-run double scored Vok, Meidl and Tesch.
Sophomore catcher
Sydney Shay (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) belted a run-scoring double in the first inning and added a sacrifice fly in the second inning.Â
Montone doubled twice and had a sacrifice fly in four plate appearances. Meidl went 2 for 3.
Jackson pitched four innings to earn the win. She struck out two and allowed three runs. Meadors struck out two innings in a scoreless fifth inning.
Grove City honored Anthony and Tesch prior to Saturday's twinbill.Â
The Wolverines will visit Geneva at 5 p.m. Tuesday to conclude a suspended conference game from last Wednesday. Geneva leads that game 5-2. Grove City will then host conference foe Hiram at 3:30 p.m. April 22 in the home finale.
