Grove City returns to top of conference

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The Grove City College women's track and field team amassed 206 team points Thursday and Friday at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships, on the way to the team title at West Virginia University's Mylan Park.

It is Grove City's first outdoor conference title since 2002 and the 13th conference crown in program history. The Wolverines accumulated a 68-point margin over runner-up Allegheny. Westminster placed third with 131 points.

Head coach Jessica Cooper earned the conference's Coach of the Year award while freshman Kiara White (Perkiomenville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) captured the league's Newcomer of the Year award. 

Overall, Grove City athletes won eight track events at the two-day meet. Senior Lydia Bennett (Bethel, Maine/Gould Academy) helped lead the Wolverines by winning three events. She won the 1500 meters in a Grove City-record time of 4 minutes, 27.84 seconds and added victories in both the 800 (2:14.44) and 5000 (17:05.17) meters. 

White won the 200 meters in a school-record time of 25.49 seconds. She also contributed to program-record efforts in both relay events. White, senior Carolyn Colteryahn (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex), sophomore Hannah Costa (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg Christian) and freshman Nadine Lauffer (New Castle, Pa.) won the 400-meter relay in a time of 48.94 seconds. 

White, Lauffer, junior Audrey Karwowski (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and freshman Megan Marchand (Cumming, Ga./Forsyth Central) won the 1600 relay in a program-record time of 3:58.08.

Lauffer also won the 400 meters in a program-record time of 56.76 seconds. Senior Grace Smith (Dover, Ohio/Dover) captured the 3000 steeplechase in a time of 10:55.06, edging classmate Ella Lyle (Hurricane, W.Va./Ignite). Lyle took second in a time of 10:59.34.

White also earned second in the 100 meters (12.56). Senior Julia Bauer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) placed runner-up in the 10,000 meters with a 39:27.08 clocking. 

Freshman Lucy Gyergyo (Wexford, Pa./Eden Christian) posted Grove City's top finish in the field events as she earned second in the triple jump. Gyergyo recorded a top leap of 36 feet, 1 1/2 inches. 

Sophomore Elly Bruner (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) took third in the long jump with a best mark of 16-10 1/2. Karwowski took third in the 400 (59.62) while Lauffer recorded a third-place time of 1:06.76 in the 400 hurdles. 

Senior Virginia Williams (Copley, Ohio/Copley) finished third in the 10,000 (40:19.35) while sophomore Cayla Lawrence (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) secured a third-place finish in the 1500 (4:41.51). Lawrence also placed fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:20.24.

Bruner cleared 5-1 to finish fourth in the high jump. Gyergyo recorded a fourth-place time of 16.49 second in the 100 hurdles. Williams added a fourth-place arrival in the steeplechase (11:44.76) while fellow senior Kaylynn Johnson (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) finished fourth in the 1500 with a time of 4:42.82. 

Johnson also finished fifth in the 800 (2:21.55). Smith placed fifth in the 1500 (4:44.36) and Marchand recorded a fifth-place finish in the 400 (60.87). Freshman Hannah Herrmann (Hilton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) finished fifth in the pole vault by clearing 10-10 1/4. Sophomore Amanda McGurk (Dallas, Pa./Lake Lehman) followed in sixth place after clearing 9-10 3/4. 

Costa took sixth in the 100 hurdles (16.81), one place ahead of sophomore Victoria Leak (Andover, N.H./Merrimack Valley). Leak finished seventh with a time of 17.84 seconds. Bruner marked at 34-4 3/4 in the triple jump, good for seventh place. Colteryahn captured seventh in the 200 (27.33) while sophomore Kendall Coddington (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) finished seventh in the high jump by clearing 4-11. 

Lyle finished seventh in the 5000 with a time of 18:10.43. Freshman Julianna Lindberg (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) recorded a seventh-place finish in both the 800 (2:22.48) and the steeplechase (12:21.21). Freshman Maggie Mollenauer (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) took seventh in the 10,000 (43:08.29) while sophomore Annie Herrmann (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) placed eighth in the 800 meters (2:22.75). 

Grove City also won the indoor conference track and field title in February. The Wolverines placed third at the 2024 outdoor championships.

Several Grove City athletes have qualified for the All-Atlantic Track and Field Championships, which will be held May 14-15 at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.
