ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The Grove City College men's golf team opened the 2024-25 season Friday and Saturday by placing fifth at the nine-team Malone Invitational, held at Tannehauf Golf Course. Grove City recorded a team score of 615 at the two-day event. The Wolverines posted an aggregate 299 Friday, then posted a 316 Saturday.
Division II West Liberty won the team title with a 585.Â
Senior
Adam Steinmetz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) led Grove City by taking fifth place overall in the 53-man field. Steinmetz shot 69-76-147 in the 36-hole event.Â
Senior
Max Vaughn (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern) finished 11th with a 150 (73-77) while freshman
Luke Gronbeck (Gibsonia, Pa./Eden Christian) took 27th with consecutive rounds of 79, good for a 158.
Junior
Brian McDonnell (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) placed 31st with a 160 (78-82) while junior
Cayden Testa (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) rounded out the lineup by finishing 47th. Testa carded 83-86-169.Â
Grove City's "B" squad placed ninth with a team score of 335. Junior
Michael Astrab (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and freshman
Seth Hartman (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) each led the "B" squad by taking 43rd place. Astrab shot 79-88-167 while Hartman carded rounds of 83 and 84 for his 167.
Freshman
Wade Springer (Topeka, Ind./Westview) tied Testa for 47th with a 169 (87-82). Sophomore
Nathan Young earned 49th (89-81-170) and sophomore
Tyler Derstein (Telford, Pa./Dock Mennonite) finished 50th by shooting back-to-back 86s.
Walsh's Kaleb Allen won the event with a 70-67-137.Â
Grove City will compete Tuesday at the Bethany Invitational.
