Gronbeck MVP as Grove City takes 3rd

BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Led by Most Valuable Performer Luke Gronbeck (Gibsonia, Pa./Eden Christian), the Grove City College men's golf team placed third overall at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships. The 72-hole championships, which began with 36 holes in the fall, concluded Friday and Saturday with two rounds at Mill Creek Golf Course. Grove City finished with a team total of 1,241 strokes.

A sophomore, Gronbeck finished the four-round tournament with a 292 total. He won medalist at the Fall Championships with a two-day score of 139 and then posted respective scores of 69 and 84 at the Spring Championships. He posted a one-stroke victory over Allegheny's Christopher Hoffman. 

Junior Nathan Young (Street, Md./Homeschooled) shot an 80 Friday and then carded the Wolverines' low round Saturday with a 76. He finished 18th overall with a 314. Junior Tyler Derstein (Telford, Pa./Dock Mennonite) posted rounds of 77 and 83 at the Spring Championships to give him a four-round score of 316. Derstein finished in 19th place. 

Sophomore Seth Hartman (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) shot an 81 Friday and followed with an 80 Saturday. He took 27th with a four-day score of 327. 

Senior Brian McDonnell (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) rounded out the lineup with consecutive 81s Friday and Saturday. 

Only golfers who played in all four rounds of the Championships are eligible for individual honors. Grove City posted rounds of 303 and 311 at the Fall Championships before recording a 307 and a 320 this weekend. 

Gronbeck is the first Grove City golfer to earn conference MVP since Cole McCook seven years ago.
