GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College women's basketball program knows the recipe to excel in the Presidents' Athletic Conference and as the 2022-23 season approaches, the Wolverines are well-stocked in all of the necessary ingredients.
Grove City welcomes back four starters and 10 other letterwinners, including nine sophomores who saw regular action as rookies. The Wolverines feature plenty of depth in the backcourt, ample versatility and a diverse trio of veterans at the center position.
Senior center
Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) and senior guard
Megan Kallock (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) will help lead Grove City's youthful roster this winter.
The 6-foot Cano averaged 7.9 points per game last season while making 21 starts. She shot 47.5 percent from the floor and will again be counted on in the paint at both ends of the court.
Kallock emerged in her first full season at Grove City last year by scoring a team-high 15.9 points per game. She also fired in 32 three-pointers and ranked among the team leaders in steals (48) and assists (45).
The conference's head coaches recognized Kallock as a Second Team All-PAC performer following the season.
Three juniors join Cano and Kallock in forming the Wolverines' veteran nucleus, center
Katie Baller (Lone Tree, Colo./Valor Christian), guard
Abby Glass (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and forward
Kat Goetz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth).
A rangy 6-footer, Baller played in a career-high 24 games last season while rotating with Cano at center. Baller will help anchor Grove City's traditionally strong full-court pressure defense.
Glass appeared in 13 games at shooting guard and will compete for increased playing time in the backcourt this season. She drained six three-pointers last year.
Goetz averaged 11.2 points and 10.0 rebounds as a freshman. She then averaged 13.4 points per game during the first five games of her sophomore season until a season-ending injury in December 2021 sidelined her. However, Goetz has returned and has the inside track to reclaim a starting spot up front this year.
Grove City also returns a pair of sophomores to its starting lineup, point guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) and forward
Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City). Both players started all 26 games as rookies last season.
Polczynski led Grove City with 105 assists and 71 steals last season. Meanwhile, Hannon ranked third in the team in both scoring average (8.0) and three-point goals (18).
Sophomores
Ashley Durig (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and
Haley Hertzler (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) also return at point guard after seeing extensive action as freshmen. Hertzler ranked third on the team with 50 assists.
Sophomore sharpshooters
Jaden Davinsizer (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and
Nevaeh Ewing (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) are also back in the Grove City guard corps. Davinsizer hit a team-leading 37 three-pointers while Ewing added 12 three-point goals.
Davinsizer and Ewing will be relied upon for outside shooting again this winter.
Three sophomores will bolster the Wolverine frontcourt as center
Kiley Ingram (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings), forward
Hayley Fenchel (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and
Blaise Kilmartin (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) are back in the fold.
The 6-foot-2 Ingram played in 24 games at center as a freshman and led Grove City with 18 blocked shots. Fenchel made 26 appearances in 2021-22 while Kilmartin played in 24 games last season.
Forward
Emily Wentworth (Potsdam, N.Y./Canton) will also challenge for time in the post after missing last season due to injury.
Six freshmen round out the roster for 10
th-year head coach
Chelle Fuss. Fuss has guided Grove City to a 50-14 (.781) mark over the last three seasons.
The Wolverines will open the 2022-23 season Friday, November 11 at Wilmington University's Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament.
Conference play begins Saturday, November 19 against visiting Geneva. That will also be Grove City's home opener.
