Grove City turns tables on SVC in quarterfinals

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team never trailed Tuesday night on the way to a 58-38 home victory over fifth-seeded Saint Vincent in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament quarterfinals in the Grove City College Arena. 

Fourth-seeded Grove City will now visit No. 1 Washington & Jefferson in the tournament semifinals Thursday at 7 p.m.

Grove City (16-10) jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, led 23-15 at halftime and then broke open the game with a 17-5 run in the third quarter. 

Junior center Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) led Grove City with 16 points while junior guard Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) fired in 13 points. Senior guard Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) recorded a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Wolverines.

Polczynski scored twice in a 15-second span early in the third quarter while a Sherrerd layup gave Grove City a 29-15 lead. Senior forward Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and sophomore guard Sarah Pifer (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) both bombed in three-pointers during the quarter while Hasley and senior guard Jaden Davinsizer (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) each scored in the paint. 

The Wolverines led 43-27 after three quarters. Hannon's three-pointer and six straight Sherrerd points helped sew up the victory.

Hannon added seven rebounds for Grove City while Hasley and Sherrerd both recorded six rebounds. Grove City amassed a 51-33 edge on the glass Tuesday night. 

Grove City finished the game 23 of 67 (34 percent) on field goals. Saint Vincent (13-13) shot 31 percent (17 of 55). The Bearcats did not attempt a free throw while Grove City went 6 of 8 at the line. 

Senior guard Haley Hertzler (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) recorded three assists. Polczynski had six steals as Grove City forced 20 turnovers. The Wolverines committed 17 turnovers. 

Emily Thompson led Saint Vincent with 12 points. 

Grove City split its regular season series with Saint Vincent, with the home team winning each game. The Wolverines earned a 59-47 home January 18 over Saint Vincent. Saint Vincent defeated Grove City three days ago in the regular season finale, 57-52, in Latrobe. 

The all-time conference tournament series between the teams is now 2-2. All four meetings have come in the quarterfinal round. 

As top seed, W&J (21-4, 18-2) received a bye into the semifinals.
