Grove City outruns Geneva, 80-77

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Senior guard Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) fired in a career-high 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting Wednesday night to help vault the Grove City College women's basketball team to an 80-77 victory at Geneva in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at Metheny Field.

The win gives Grove City (15-9, 13-6) a season sweep of Geneva (10-14, 7-12). The victory also gives Grove City the No. 4 seed in next week's six-team conference tournament. Grove City will host the No. 5 seed, either Saint Vincent or Bethany, next Tuesday in the tournament quarterfinals.

Grove City led 16-11 after one quarter and then pushed the lead to 44-31 by halftime. The lead quickly swelled to 48-31 on consecutive baskets from junior center Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) and Polczynski.

Geneva cut the lead to 59-58 by the end of the third quarter, however, with a 28-10 run. But Grove City never relinquished the lead as junior guard Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) opened the fourth quarter with a layup while freshman forward Alexis Hudson (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) followed with a jumper.

Polczynski gave Grove City an 80-77 lead by making two free throws with five seconds left. Her steal on the final possession of the game cemented the win.

Sherrerd added 10 points and a team-leading eight rebounds while Hasley also finished with 10 points. Sophomore guard Bethany Thompson (Exeter Township, Pa./High Point Baptist) chipped in nine points.

Grove City shot 48 percent (31 of 65) from the field for the game. Geneva finished 28 of 72 (39 percent) from the floor. Led by Sherrerd, Grove City accumulated a 42-39 edge on the glass. Hasley collected six rebounds.

Hasley and Polczynski both recorded four assists. Polczynski added four steals. Grove City had 19 turnovers. Geneva committed 15 turnovers.

Emily Garvin led Geneva with 22 points.

Grove City concludes the regular season Saturday at Saint Vincent.
