Grove City tops Westminster in PAC action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 11-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by capturing the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Westminster as the visiting Wolverines earned a 13-4 victory. Westminster took the second game, 3-1. Saturday's second game does not count in the conference standings.

Grove City battered Westminster pitching for 18 hits in Saturday's opener as all nine offensive starters had at least one hit. Senior catcher Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) helped lead the offensive attack by tripling and also belting a pair of doubles.

Sophomore center fielder Aaron Jenks (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) tripled and scored three runs as part of a 3-for-4 outing. Meanwhile, senior left fielder Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) also had three hits for the Wolverines (13-7, 11-4 PAC). Sophomore third baseman C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and freshman DH Isaak Flaming (Dresden, Maine/Morse) both had two hits. Freshman shortstop Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) tripled.

Grove City grabbed a 5-0 lead in the third inning as Orner's two-run triple highlighted the five-run inning. Sophomore right fielder Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) opened the scoring when his sacrifice fly scored Flaming. Saylor singled in Jenks while Clary scored the third run of the inning when senior second baseman Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) hit into a force play.

The lead grew to 9-0 as Grove City generated four runs in the top of the fourth. Senior first baseman Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) roped a two-run single that scored Tambellini and Jenks. The Wolverines added three more runs in the seventh as Baccari and Jenks both tripled during the inning.

Sophomore pitcher Calvin Burns (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) earned the win by allowing no earned runs in 6 2/3 innings. He allowed only three hits and one walk. Junior Noah Sedmak (Falls Church, Va./Falls Church) pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief. Junior Robby Randolph (Cranberry Township, Pa./North Catholic) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

In Game Two, Flaming walked and scored on an error in the second inning to give Grove City a 1-0 lead. Westminster tied the game in the fourth, then won it in the bottom of the seventh on Austin Webb's two-run home run.

Senior pitcher D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) allowed one run and four hits in five innings. Senior Jacob Brothers (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Christian) pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one hit and two runs. Brothers took the setback.

Each team had five hits in the nightcap. Grove City had five singles.

The teams will meet Sunday at 2 p.m. for a conference doubleheader at Grove City's Jack Behringer Field. The teams will play a seven-inning game, followed by a nine-inning game. Both games will count in the conference standings.
