David Folkmire (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) will represent the Wolverines in the 2016 DIII Senior Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C., while outside linebacker
Jeff Croll (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock), defensive end
Dan Dorman (North Canton, Ohio/GlenOak), punter
Anthony Marnejon (Columbiana, Ohio/Crestview) and wide receiver
Brett Pinson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) will all play in the 2016 Tazón de Estrellas in Mexicali, Mexico.
Folkmire finished his career as a four-year letterwinner and two-year starter at wide receiver for the Wolverines, coming back in 2016 as a fifth-year senior after missing the 2015 campaign due to injury. This season, he recorded 14 catches for 133 yards while starting all 10 games, and, as a sophomore, he led the Wolverines with 51 receptions for 391 yards and three touchdowns. For his career, he recorded 72 receptions for 611 yards and three scores.
The DIII Senior Classic, presented by the National Scouting Showcase, will kickoff at 12:30 PM on December 17 at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach. The game features approximately 90 players from NCAA Division III teams, divided into North and South squads that will compete against each other.
Croll, a three-year letterwinner and one of Grove City's captains in 2016, appeared in nine games at linebacker, making eight starts, and was fourth on the team with 46 tackles.
Dorman, a four-year letterwinner on the Wolverine defense and another 2016 team captain, made the switch from linebacker to defensive end as a senior. He appeared in all 10 games and started the final eight of the season. He ranked second among the team's defensive linemen with 39 tackles and shared the team lead with a pair of fumble recoveries while ranking second in tackles for loss (8.5) and third in sacks (2.5).
Marnejon, a four-year letterwinner and Grove City's all-time leader in total punts and total punting yardage, appeared in six games while battling injuries during his senior season. He averaged a career-best 40.0 yards per punt to rank third in the Presidents' Athletic Conference and earn All-PAC Honorable Mention in 2016. Marnejon finished his career third in program history with a 36.9 yards per punt average.
Pinson, a three-year letterwinner, started 19 games over the past two seasons for Grove City, earning All-PAC Honorable Mention in both seasons while serving as a captain in 2016. He ranked second on the team with 51 receptions, 662 yards and five touchdowns in 2016. His 5.1 receptions per game were seventh-best in the PAC. For his career, Pinson ranks sixth in program history in both receiving yards (1,308) and receiving touchdowns (11) while hauling in 83 career receptions.
The 2016 edition of Tazón de Estrellas will kickoff at 5 p.m. EST (2 p.m., local) on Saturday, December 17, at CETYS Universidad in Mexicali, Mexico as Team Stars and Stripes, the team of NCAA Division III players, takes on an all-star team of players from CONADEIP, the premier collegiate American Football league in Mexico.
This marks the seventh straight year that Grove City players competed for Team Stars and Stripes. Last year,
Josh Peach was named bowl MVP and
Brandon Berringer,
Alex Jewell and
Bobby Tuttle also played significant roles in helping Team Stars and Stripes rally for a 15-14 victory over Team CONADEIP.
In 2010, offensive tackle Pete Polesnak helped Team Stars and Stripes to a 48-7 victory over the Mexican all-star team while, in 2011, nose tackle Jarred Frawley competed for U.S. side in a 45-27 setback. In 2012, guard Josh Bermann, linebacker Jason Ferguson and tailback Shane Kaclik helped Team Stars and Stripes to a 32-15 victory over the CONADIEP squad.
Linebacker Ben Manwaring, offensive tackle Ethan Martin and wide receiver Anthony Ritchie played key roles in Team Stars and Stripes' 29-7 victory in 2013 while linebacker
Jason Skyrm competed for the Stars and Stripes in a 31-17 loss in 2014.
Three Grove City players participated in the Tazón de Estrellas' predecessor, the Aztec Bowl. Brock McCullough played for the United States in 2000 while Aaron Margo and Matt Gregg followed in 2005 and 2007, respectively.
The United States is 7-2 with Grove City players competing in the Aztec Bowl or Tazón de Estrellas.
