Wolverines fall at W&J

Box Score

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team couldn't overcome five errors over the first four innings, falling to Washington and Jefferson 13-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Ross Memorial Park on Wednesday night.

Grove City's two hottest hitters - sophomore catcher Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) and sophomore right fielder Nolan Myers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) - accounted for four of the Wolverines' nine hits to lead the team offensively. Fritz extended his hitting streak to 17 games by going 2 for 4 while Myers also went 2 for 4 to push his streak to 13 games.

Sophomore shortstop David Laylock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) and freshman outfielder Ryan Vero (Butler, Pa./Butler) each went 1 for 2 with a double while freshman center fielder Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area), sophomore third baseman Brandon Gresh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) and senior second baseman Josh Hodges (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) each had one hit.

Three hits, three walks, a wild pitch and a Wolverine error allowed the Presidents (19-10, 11-7 PAC) to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Grove City (11-19, 7-13) would get one of those runs back in the top of the third when Graham would score from first on a Laylock double to right center field, cutting the lead to 4-1.

That would be as close as Grove City would get, however, as a pair of errors and a wild pitch allowed W&J to score three runs in the bottom of the third. The Presidents would use two more Grove City errors in the bottom of the fourth to score four more runs, extending their lead to 11-1 and putting the game out of reach.

Freshman Matt Cottrill (Apple Creek, Ohio/Waynedale) took the loss on the mound for the Wolverines, allowing six earned runs on six hits over three innings. Junior Ryan Gallagher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler), senior Chris Curran (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) and sophomore Jimmy Palmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) all saw action in relief.

Grove City steps away from conference play on Saturday, visiting Penn State Behrend for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
