Box Score 4 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened the 2011 season over winter break with a five-game set of games in Winter Haven, Fla.
Grove City opened the trip by dropping both ends of a doubleheader with Farmingdale State (N.Y.) February 24, 11-7 and 10-3.
The next day, the Wolverines dropped a 9-2 decision to perennial powerhouse Augustana (Ill.). Grove City then finished the trip with a pair of 6-4 setbacks against Brandeis Saturday.
In Thursday's opener against Farmingdale, senior center fielder Dan Quirk (Albany, N.Y./Schuylerville) went 2 for 3 and senior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) doubled. Six Grove City errors helped lead to eight unearned runs.
Senior Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) started and allowed three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. Junior Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) and senior Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) both pitched in relief.
Sophomore first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) doubled twice in Game Two against Farmingdale State. Freshman shortstop Tom Hawley (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) added two hits.
Sophomore pitcher Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) started and pitched four innings, allowing five earned runs. Junior Matt Smith (Albany, N.Y./Loudonville Christian), senior J.T. Seelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and senior Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) all pitched in relief.
Against Augustana, sophomore right fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) collected two hits and Hawley doubled in two runs. Senior Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) started and gave up four runs in 4 2/3 innings. Freshman Brandon Baker (Germantown, Md./Northwest) and Seelman both pitched in relief.
Quirk doubled and singled while senior second baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) went 2 for 3 in Saturday's opener with Brandeis. Senior Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) started for the Wolverines and pitched into the fifth, allowing three earned runs. Krull, Hasek and senior Steve Stombaugh (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Mount Lebanon) all pitched in relief with Krull taking the setback.
Patterson doubled in the nightcap against Brandeis while senior DH Kyle Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) singled twice.
Sophomore Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) started and allowed five runs (no earned runs) in 2 2/3 innings. Sophomore Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) and sophomore Jim Woodhall (Litchfield, Ohio/Buckeye) both pitched in relief. Two pivotal errors led to six unearned runs.
Patterson hit .500 (5 for 10) during the trip and Quirk went 5 for 12 (.417). Seelman recorded a pair of scoreless relief outings, covering three innings.
Grove City will visit Ohio Wesleyan Wednesday at 1 p.m. in non-conference doubleheader action.
