WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened the 2010 season last week in Winter Haven, Fla. with four games against regional powerhouses.

Grove City opened the trip February 25 by dropping a doubleheader with Augustana (Ill.), 6-5 and 7-2. The next day, NCAA College World Series participant Farmingdale State (N.Y.) handed Grove City a 12-1 setback.

The Wolverines concluded the trip with a rain-shortened 10-3 setback against Widener in the opener of a doubleheader. Rain postponed the second half of the doubleheader.

Senior first baseman Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy) drove in a pair of runs.

Farmingdale State scored 10 runs over the final four innings en route to the win February 26. Junior Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) started and allowed one uneared run in two innings. Sophomore Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) tossed one scoreless inning of relief while junior Matt Smith (Albany, N.Y./Loudonville Christian) yielded one run and struck out three in two innings out of the bullpen.

Sacks went 3 for 3 with a triple and two stolen bases against Widener while Patterson collected two hits. Freshman catcher Andrew Desrosiers (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) doubled in his first collegiate start.

Junior Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) started and took the setback for Grove City. He yielded four runs in 1 1/3 innings. Smith threw 2 2/3 innings of relief while Krull threw a scoreless fifth.
