Grove City tops La Roche

PITTSBURGH -- Five Grove City players collected three hits each Thursday afternoon to help lift the visiting Wolverines to a 15-8 win over La Roche in non-conference baseball action at John Arnold Field.

All nine starters had at least one hit for Grove City, which finished the game with 21 total hits. Eight players scored at least once.

Sophomore third baseman Brandon Durbin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) helped pace the Grove City attack by going 3 for 6 with a double and a career-high four runs batted in. Freshman right fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) collected three hits in four at-bats while also scoring three runs. Junior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) both went 3 for 6. Kriger scored three runs.

Also for Grove City, freshman second baseman Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) rapped three hits and drove in three runs. Junior shortstop Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) tripled, doubled and drove in three runs.  Patterson ripped a two-run double in the top of the second to highlight Grove City's six-run outburst.

Junior pitcher Matt Smith (Albany, N.Y./Loudonville Christian) made his first collegiate start and yielded three runs in 4 1/3 innings. Junior Steve Stombaugh (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Mount Lebanon) pitched 2/3 of an inning and earned his second win in as many days.

Junior Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny), freshman Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) and junior Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) all pitched in relief.

Sacks is hitting .650 (13 for 20) this season and boasts an on-base percentage of .731. Magister is 7 for 10 (.700) this week with four runs scored while Patterson is 7 for 15 (.467) with four extra-base hits and nine runs batted in this week.

Grove City will host Pitt-Greensburg Monday at 1 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader at Jack Behringer Field. It will be the Wolverines' 2010 home opener.
