Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team opened NCAA Division III Championship Tournament action Friday by dropping a 9-1 decision to top-seeded Rowan at the Mount Union Regional, held at Rafeld-Rogers Field.
Rowan (32-10) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, then added a run in the second and two more runs in the fourth inning.Â
Grove City broke through in the seventh inning when sophomore third baseman
Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) singled in freshman pinch runner
Braeden Coyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair).Â
Bevin led Grove City by going 3 for 5. Junior first baseman
Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) and freshman shortstop
Sam Meredith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) also singled. Grove City left nine runners on base.
Senior pitcher
David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler) pitched five innings and allowed six runs. Leslie (9-2) struck out four.Â
Sophomores
Jack Houston (Vienna, Va./Vienna),
David Gallagher (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) and
Michael Earman (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) all pitched in relief. Houston allowed three runs in the sixth inning. Gallagher pitched two scoreless innings while Earman tossed a scoreless ninth.
This is Grove City's second all-time NCAA Tournament appearance. The Wolverines will play either Catholic or Mount Union in an elimination game Saturday at 8:30 a.m. in Alliance.
