Four earn conference honors Monday afternoon

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Presidents' Athletic Conference honored four Grove City College spring sports competitors with weekly recognition Monday afternoon after their respective performances last week.

Four Grove City sports teams produced an honoree this week. In women's lacrosse, sophomore attack Gwen Shilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) captured Offensive Player of the Week. Junior shortstop-pitcher Kyla Campbell (Altoona, Pa./Glendale) earned Newcomer of the Week in softball while freshman shortstop Sam Meredith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) captured that same honor in baseball.

Freshman faceoff ace Evan Gill (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) secured Newcomer of the Week in men's lacrosse.

Shilling fired in three goals and added three assists Saturday in Grove City's 13-2 win at Thiel in the regular season finale. She scored the first two goals of the game for Grove City (10-6, 9-0 PAC), then recording three assists in the third quarter to help stretch the Wolverines' lead to 11-0.

Shilling currently ranks second on the squad with 36 goals this season. She has 22 goals in conference play this year.

A first-year junior, Campbell helped Grove City to a 4-0 record last week in conference play. The four wins gave Grove City (24-11, 15-5) the conference's regular season title and the top seed in this week's conference tournament. Offensively, Campbell hit .700 (7 for 10) with two doubles, a triple, six runs scored, and a 1.100 slugging percentage. She went 3 for 4 in both games last Tuesday as the Wolverines earned two 10-0 wins at Franciscan.

Campbell also threw a one-hit shutout in Game Two at Franciscan. She struck out seven batters in five innings. Saturday, Campbell went 3 for 4 in Grove City's doubleheader sweep of Saint Vincent. She also pitched three innings in Game Two. For the week, Campbell went 1-0 with a 2.63 earned run average in the circle. She struck out eight batters in eight innings.

Campbell is hitting .349 with 22 runs batted in this year. In the circle, Campbell is 9-3 with a save in 17 total appearances.

Meredith hit .450 (9 for 20) in Grove City's 4-0 week that included conference sweeps of Bethany and Thiel. He had two three-hit games Wednesday, as well as three runs scored and three runs batted in at Bethany. Meredith then had three total hits in the Thiel twinbill, extending his hitting streak to 12 games.

Meredith currently ranks second on the team with a .380 batting average. His 49 hits are third-most on the squad.

Gill won 19 of 23 faceoffs (.826) in Grove City's 27-2 win at Thiel last Wednesday. He also had 12 ground balls, as the Wolverines (11-7, 8-0 PAC) completed their sixth straight undefeated PAC regular season and earned the top seed in the conference tournament.

Gill has won 80.4 percent (90 of 112) of his faceoff opportunities this year. He ranks second on the team with 58 ground balls.

The Grove City women's lacrosse team will host a conference tournament semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Wolverines will host either Thiel or Westminster in the semifinals. The softball team will host the six-team double-elimination conference tournament, starting Thursday at 10 a.m. Grove City will host either Allegheny or Bethany at 2 p.m. Thursday.

The Grove City baseball team (25-9, 15-3) concludes the regular season Saturday at 1 p.m. by hosting Saint Vincent in a conference doubleheader. Meanwhile, the men's lacrosse team will host fourth-seeded Westminster at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the conference tournament semifinals.
