Wolverines charge into title game

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's lacrosse team bolted to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter Thursday night en route to a 17-7 win over visiting Westminster in the semifinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Robert E. Thorn Field.

Top-seeded Grove City (11-6) advances to the championship game Saturday. Grove City will host No. 3 Chatham at 1 p.m. in the title game at Thorn Field. Chatham dumped second-seeded Washington & Jefferson in the other semifinal Thursday night, 12-11.

Sophomore attack Gwen Shilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) fired in three goals in the first period while sophomore midfielder Jess Robinette (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) added two goals in the first 15 minutes. 

Robinette, Shilling and sophomore midfielder Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) all registered four goals for the Wolverines while junior attack Jackie Rowell (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) pumped in three goals. Senior midfielder Abby Roetering (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and sophomore attack Taylor Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) also scored for the Wolverines.

Blythe chalked up seven of the Wolverines' 10 assists Thursday night. Roetering, Rowell and freshman attack Mia Mygatt (Silver Spring, Md./Brookewood) also notched assists. 

Stevenson led Grove City by collecting six ground balls. Junior defender Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) picked up four ground balls. Hasley also caused four turnovers while Stevenson caused three turnovers. Senior defenders Emily Arnold (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) and Amber Wartman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) caused two turnovers each.

Senior goalie Elyse Kiggins (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) earned the win by making one save in 45 minutes. Junior Mia Gallagher (Mogadore, Ohio/Archibishop Hoban) played the fourth quarter and also made one save. 

Grove City outshot the Titans, 40-12, including a 27-9 edge in shots on goal. Westminster had 29 turnovers while Grove City had 22 turnovers. 

Grove City defeated Chatham during the regular season, 10-7, April 2 in Grove City. The Wolverines are the defending conference champions. Saturday's winner earns the conference's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
