GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Presidents' Athletic Conference honored two Grove City College fall sports athletes Monday afternoon with weekly recognition after their respective performances last week.
Senior linebacker
Ben Bladel (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) earned Defensive Player of the Week in football. In women's tennis, freshman
Blaire Beatty (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Bloomfield Christian) captured Newcomer of the Week honors.
Bladel tied his own Grove City single-game record by recording four quarterback sacks in Saturday night's 22-9 triumph at Geneva. He finished with five tackles for loss while helping Grove City hold Geneva to minus-10 rushing yards.
Bladel leads the conference with 5.5 sacks through four games. His 9.5 tackles for loss are also tops in the league. He owns Grove City's career records with 39.5 sacks and 68.5 career tackles for loss.
Beatty went 4-0 in conference play last week. Last Saturday, she earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at sixth singles against visiting Washington & Jefferson after teaming with sophomore
Iris Kiehl (Warren, Pa./Warren) for a 6-1 win at third doubles. Those two wins helped Grove City prevail 6-1.
Last Wednesday, she secured two of the Wolverines' three wins at Allegheny. She and Kiehl prevailed 6-1 at No. 3 doubles and Beatty then captured a 6-1, 7-5 victory at sixth singles.
Beatty is 7-1 in singles action. She and Kiehl have won 8 of their 9 matches this year.
The Grove City women's tennis team closes the regular season Thursday at 3 p.m. by hosting PennWest Edinboro. The Grove City football team will host Waynesburg University at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Homecoming game at Robert E. Thorn Field.
