Box Score 2 DuBOIS, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team captured both ends of a non-conference doubleheader Friday night at Penn State DuBois. Grove City (8-5) picked up a 12-3 victory in Game One at Showers Field, then rallied late for a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
In Game Two, freshman pitcher
Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) cracked a game-tying double with one out in the top of the seventh inning as he drove in freshman left fielder
Caison Holland (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge). Bevin then scored the go-ahead run on a run-scoring single from junior right fielder
Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley).
Bevin then closed out the win by retiring DuBois in order in the bottom of the seventh. He fired a complete game while striking out eight men in seven innings. Bevin yielded one earned run and walked three.
Minnich went 2 for 3 with a double while senior first baseman
Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) doubled and singled in four at-bats. Bevin and junior shortstop
Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) also went 2 for 4. Holland scored twice.Â
Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as sophomore center fielder
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) singled in Holland. Penn State DuBois carried a 3-1 lead into the sixth but the Wolverines halved the lead when Williams doubled in Minnich.
The Wolverines jumped out a 6-0 lead in the opener by scoring three times in each of the first two innings. Williams laced a run-scoring double in the first inning, then singled in Bevin and Holland in the second inning. Minnich then launched a two-run home run in the fourth inning, pushing the lead to 8-1.
Grove City sealed the win with four more runs in the seventh inning. Williams and sophomore third baseman
Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry) both scored on Sampson's two-run double. Senior second baseman
Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) singled in freshman DH
Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) to give the Wolverines an 11-2 lead. Junior catcher
Sam DiStefano (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) closed the scoring by driving in Sampson with a single.
Williams also doubled for Grove City, which finished with 10 hits. He went 2 for 4 while Lavrich went 2 for 2. Bevin, Holland, Lavrich and Vittone all scored twice.
Senior pitcher
Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) earned the win by striking out nine men over seven innings. He allowed two earned runs and did not walk a batter.Â
Grove City will visit Baldwin Wallace at 4 p.m. Wednesday in non-conference play.
