ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The Grove City College men's golf team placed fourth at the 10-team Malone Invitational, held Friday and Saturday at Tannehauf Golf Club. Grove City finished the 36-hole event with a team score of 606. Malone won the event with a 566 while Wheaton (Ill.) finished second with a team score of 593.
Senior
Nathan Young (Street, Md./Homeschooled) led Grove City by placing third overall. He shot 71 Friday and then carded a 73 Saturday to shoot an even-par 144.
Junior
Luke Gronbeck (Gibsonia, Pa./Eden Christian) followed in seventh place with a two-day total of 146 (72-74). Junior
Will Nelson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian) placed 28th with a 157, including a 77 Saturday.
Senior
Tyler Derstein (Telford, Pa./Dock Mennonite) posted rounds of 79 and 80 to place 36th with his 159. Junior
Seth Hartman (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) rounded out the lineup with a two-day score of 165 (82-83).
Grove City also entered a "B" quintet into the tournament, with that squad recording a team total of 647. Freshman
Parker Charlton (Capon Bridge, W.Va./Hampshire) led the team with a 159 (80-79). Charlton tied for 36th.
Sophomore
Topher Drombetta (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) placed 41st with a 161 (83-78) while junior
Wade Springer (Topeka, Ind./Westview) tied for 44th with a 162 (79-83). Freshman
Brett Springer (Topeka, Ind./Westview) took 49th with rounds of 82 and 83, good for a 165. Senior
Maxwell Caimano (Washington, Pa./Peters Township) finished 52nd after shooting 182 (90-92).
Fifty-four men competed in the event. Malone's Fletcher Cravens won the individual title with a 138.
Grove City returns to action September 13-14 at the Penn State Altoona Toftrees Invitational.
