Gronbeck earns 2nd; Wolverines take 5th Monday

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's golf team opened its 2026-27 season Monday afternoon by taking fifth place at the 15-team Westminster Invitational, held at Avalon Field Club. Grove City finished the day with a team score of 326. 

Junior Luke Gronbeck (Gibsonia, Pa./Eden Christian) helped lead the Wolverines by earning second place on the individual leaderboard. Gronbeck shot a 74 on the par-72 course. 

Junior Will Nelson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian) placed 12th overall with a 79 while senior Nathan Young (Street, Md./Homeschooled) took 45th place with an 86. Junior Seth Hartman (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) posted an 87, good for 55th, while senior Tyler Derstein (Telford, Pa./Dock Mennonite) rounded out the lineup by taking 71st. Derstein carded a 91.

Two Grove City men played as individuals. Junior Wade Springer (Topeka, Ind./Westview) finished 55th with an 87. Junior Will Whitehead (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) shot a 97, placing him 82nd.

Pitt-Bradford's Chase Hartnett earned medalist with a 72. Eighty-nine men competed in the event. Pitt-Bradford won the team title with a 306. 

Grove City returns to action Friday and Saturday at the Malone Invitational in Alliance, Ohio.
