Grove City drops two 1-run games

HIRAM, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a pair of one-run decisions Wednesday afternoon in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Hiram. Hiram pulled out a 2-1 win in Game One, then scored an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth inning in the second game to secure a 5-4 victory.

Grove City (9-12, 4-4) collected 10 hits in the opener but stranded nine runners on base. The Wolverines grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when freshman third baseman Nick Remish (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) singled in junior center fielder David Chandler (Leesburg, Va./St. John's).

Chandler finished 2 for 4, along with a walk. Freshman DH Johnny Reyes (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) paced Grove City's offense by going 3 for 4 with a double.

Freshman pitcher Noah Mackie (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) started and pitched seven innings. He struck out seven while allowing two runs. Freshman Wyatt Hopson (Middletown, Md./Middletown) retired all three batters faced in the eighth inning.

Grove City took a 2-0 lead in the nightcap when senior first baseman Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) launched a two-run home run in the third inning. One inning later, freshman shortstop Kyle Rhineberger (Perry, Ohio/Perry) doubled in junior catcher Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour).

Hiram rallied to take a 4-3 lead into the eighth inning. Reyes tied the game in the top of the eighth when his groundout scored junior right fielder Caleb Backos (Troy, Mich./Bloomfield Christian).

Backos doubled twice in Game Two while junior left fielder Dan Luko (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) doubled as part of a 3-for-5 performance. Rhineberger went 2 for 4 and Weber added a double.

Freshman pitcher Caz Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) struck out 10 men in 6 2/3 innings. He allowed five hits and four runs. Sophomore Corey Veverka (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief. He struck out three men, allowing one hit and an unearned run.
