GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team piled up 32 runs Thursday afternoon on the way to sweeping a doubleheader from visiting Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Jack Behringer Field. Grove City earned an 18-3 victory in Game One, then pulled out a 14-10 win in the nightcap. Game One went only seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Grove City bolted to an 18-0 lead in the opener as the Wolverines scored six runs in the first inning, two runs in the second, eight runs in the fourth and a pair of tallies in the fifth inning.Â
Senior second baseman
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) helped pace Grove City's 17-hit attack by belting a three-run home run in the first inning. Sampson, who returned from a 14-game injury absence, finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored. He also made his first collegiate start at second base after spending his first three seasons as the Wolverines' starting center fielder.
Senior first baseman
Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) belted three doubles as he went 3 for 3 with four runs scored. Freshman shortstop
Kyle Rhineberger (Perry, Ohio/Perry) went 3 for 4 while freshman DH
Johnny Reyes (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) doubled, singled and knocked in three runs. Junior catcher
Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) doubled and drove in three runs.Â
Freshman third baseman
Nick Remish (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) went 2 for 3 while junior center fielder
David Chandler (Leesburg, Va./St. John's) scored three times.Â
Reyes cracked a two-run double in the first inning while Sampson later launched his home run as Grove City led 6-0. Marinpetro doubled in Chandler in the second inning, then crossed home on a Reyes single.
In the fourth inning, Weber doubled in Marinpetro and Remish. Junior right fielder
Caleb Backos (Troy, Mich./Bloomfield Christian) drove in Sampson with a sacrifice fly while Remish's two-run single capped the Wolverines' eight-run rally. Sophomore outfielder
Braeden Coyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) singled in Sampson and Weber in the fifth inning.
Freshman pitcher
Wyatt Hopson (Middletown, Md./Middletown) earned the win by striking out seven men in five shutout innings. Hopson did not walk a batter and allowed only two hits.Â

Ethan Lingrell (Ottawa, Ont./Veritas Academy) pitched 2/3 of an inning. Junior
Wil Peters (Mesa, Ariz./Westwood) closed out the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. He fanned three men.
Grove City led 9-3 after three innings of Game Two. Waynesburg rallied to tie the game with five runs in the fourth and another run in the top of the sixth. Grove City quickly broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth inning, however, as Reyes belted a two-run home run down the left-field line.Â
Later in the inning, Sampson singled in Rhineberger and subsequently scored on another Marinpetro double.Â
Remish put Grove City up 2-0 in the first inning when his single brought home Marinpetro and Sampson. Sampson singled in Chandler in the second inning. Sampson then highlighted Grove City's six-run third inning by roping a two-run single.
Sampson finished 5 for 6 with four runs scored and four runs batted in. Remish went 4 for 5 with two doubles while Chandler tripled, doubled and singled. Marinpetro went 2 for 4 and junior left fielder
Dan Luko (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) doubled as part of a 2-for-5 performance.Â
All nine offensive starters had at least one hit for the Wolverines, who finished with 20 hits.Â
Freshman pitcher
Jack Guiffre (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) earned the win in relief. He allowed two runs in 2 2/3 innings. Junior
Bryce Trischler (Mars, Pa./Shady Side Academy) recorded the save by throwing three scoreless innings. He did not allow a hit while picking up his first save of the season.
Freshman pitcher
Cole Reber (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) started for Grove City. He allowed three runs in three innings while also striking out three. Freshman
Graham Romer (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) replaced Reber in the fourth inning.Â
The Wolverines will visit conference foe Allegheny at 1 p.m. Saturday for a doubleheader.
