Late heroics help clinch tourney spot

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team clinched a spot in next week's six-team Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament by earning a pair of one-run home wins Monday over Thiel in a conference doubleheader at Jack Behringer Field.

Grove City (18-15, 13-7) scored four times in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull out a 9-8 win in the opener. Grove City then captured an 8-7 victory in Game Two.

Junior third baseman Treyton Sarvis (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) broke a 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth inning in the nightcap by singling through the left side on a 0-2 pitch with two outs. Sarvis's hit scored junior catcher Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour), giving Grove City its fourth one-run win in the last nine days.

Grove City trailed 2-0 in the second inning of the nightcap before surging ahead for the first time. Weber scored on a throwing error while Sarvis's safety squeeze scored freshman DH Johnny Reyes (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) to tie the game. Junior center fielder David Chandler (Leesburg, Va./St. John's) then doubled home senior shortstop Raymond Stierer (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) to give Grove City a 3-2 lead.

Stierer scored on a fourth-inning sacrifice fly from junior right fielder Caleb Backos (Troy, Mich./Bloomfield Christian). Chandler later scored on an error in the inning.

In the fifth inning, Stierer singled in freshman second baseman Kyle Rhineberger (Perry, Ohio/Perry) while Backos doubled in Chandler one inning later.

Chandler and Stierer both went 3 for 4 with two doubles. Grove City finished with 11 hits.

Sophomore pitcher Corey Veverka (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) earned the victory by recording the final two outs of the top of the ninth inning. Freshman Caz Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) started and pitched four innings. He struck out four while walking five men and allowing three earned runs. Freshman Graham Romer (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief and yielded three earned runs.

Sophomore Kallen Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) cracked a go-ahead pinch-hit two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to cap Grove City's four-run comeback. Durbin's hit through the right side scored junior left fielder Dan Luko (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regiona) and senior first baseman Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) with the tying and go-ahead runs.

Marinpetro singled in Stierer earlier in the inning, cutting Thiel's lead to 8-6. Luko followed by driving in Chandler with a single.

Marinpetro finished 3 for 4 while senior second baseman Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) went 2 for 3.

Junior pitcher Wil Peters (Mesa, Ariz./Westwood) earned the win by pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Veverka secured the save by striking out two men in a perfect ninth inning.

Junior pitcher Bryce Trischler (Mars, Pa./Shady Side Academy) started and yielded four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Freshman Wyatt Hopson (Middletown, Md./Middletown) allowed three runs in 1 2/3 innings. Rookie Jack Guiffre (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

The Wolverines will close the regular season Friday at 1 p.m. with a conference doubleheader at Saint Vincent. The Wolverines can finish as the third, fourth, fifth or sixth seed in next week's double-elimination conference tournament.
