GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's lacrosse team fell behind visiting Otterbein 2-0 in the first three minutes of the teams' non-conference game Wednesday night at Robert E. Thorn Field. But the Wolverines counterpunched with a 12-goal onslaught over the next 19 minutes to take control of the game as Grove City (13-3) captured an 18-8 victory. It is the Wolverines' 13th straight win.
Junior midfielder
Jess Robinette (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) fired in four goals and added a pair of assists for Grove City while junior attack
Gwen Shilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) pumped in four goals. Junior attack
Taylor Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) and junior midfielder
Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) both scored three times.Â
Sophomore midfielder
Mia Mygatt (Silver Spring, Md./Brookewood) added two goals while senior attack
Jackie Rowell (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) and freshman midfielder
Addy Porter (Jenks, Okla./Jenks) also scored.Â
Blythe also assisted on four goals, giving her a game-high seven points. Rowell racked up three assists and Robinette assisted two goals. Mygatt, Stevenson and freshman midfielder
Elliette Smith (Butler, Pa./Butler) also posted assists.
Stevenson, Porter and Mygatt scored in a 45-second span of the first quarter to give the Wolverines a 3-2 lead. Stevenson scored again at 7:49, then assisted Robinette's goal 40 seconds later to give Grove City a 5-2 lead. Two Shilling goals and a Mygatt tally gave the Wolverines an 8-2 lead after 15 minutes.Â
Shilling's goal with 32 seconds left in the first half gave the Wolverines a 13-3 halftime lead.Â
Grove City limited Otterbein (10-6) to 18 total shots while forcing the Cardinals into 28 turnovers. Freshman defender
Gabri Hallam (Buffalo, N.Y./Clarence) set a single-game Grove City record by causing 10 turnovers. Robinette and senior defender
Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) both caused two turnovers.Â
Hallam also led Grove City by picking up five ground balls. Mygatt, Robinette and Shilling all collected four ground balls. Hallam also had five draw controls.Â
Grove City finished the game with 34 total shots. The Wolverines owned a 27-12 edge in shots on goal. Grove City committed 19 turnovers.Â
Senior goalie
Mia Gallagher (Mogadore, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) earned the win by stopping four shots.Â
The Wolverines close the regular season Saturday at 3 p.m. when they host Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
