GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team moved to 11-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by splitting a home doubleheader with conference foe Bethany (21-14, 11-7). Grove City rallied for a 4-3, 11-inning victory in the opener while Bethany captured a come-from-behind 13-9 win in Game Two at Jack Behringer Field.
Sophomore
Kallen Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) gave Grove City the win in the bottom of the 11th inning of Game One when his two-out, pinch-hit single scored junior right fielder
Caleb Backos (Troy, Mich./Bloomfield Christian). Backos opened the inning with a single, stole second and moved to third base on a single from freshman third baseman
Nick Remish (Methacton, Pa./Norristown).
Backos gave Grove City (16-15) a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning when his two-out double to left field scored junior center fielder
David Chandler (Leesburg, Va./St. John's) and senior first baseman
Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny).Â
Bethany tied the game in the top of the ninth inning and had the go-ahead run at second base. But senior reliever
Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry) ended the threat by striking out the first two men he faced.
Lavrich (4-2) earned the win with 2 2/3 hitless innings of relief. He struck out four men and walked one. Freshman
Noah Mackie (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) started and pitched a career-best 8 1/3 innings. He struck out five while allowing three runs.
Chandler went 4 for 4 to help pace the Wolverines' 11-hit attack. Backos and junior catcher
Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) both went 2 for 5. Junior left fielder
Dan Luko (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) doubled.
Marinpetro went 3 for 5 with two doubles in Game Two while Remish also cracked a double. Luko went 2 for 3 and freshman DH
Johnny Reyes (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) singled twice.Â
Grove City trailed 8-5 in the sixth but surged ahead with a four-run rally. Freshman shortstop Kyle Rhinberger (Perry, Ohio/Perry) scored on a wild pitch while Chandler came home on Marinpetro's single. Luko tied the game by singling in Marinpetro. Senior second baseman
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) scored the fourth run of the inning on an error.
Bethany scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to reclaim the lead, however.Â
Freshman pitcher
Caz Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) started and allowed four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Freshman
Wyatt Hopson (Middletown, Md./Middletown) closed out the fifth inning. Freshman
Graham Romer (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany), sophomore
Corey Veverka (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) and junior
Bryce Trischler (Mars, Pa./Shady Side Academy) also pitched in relief.
Trischler finished up with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Veverka took the setback.
Grove City will host Thiel at 1 p.m. Saturday in a conference doubleheader.
