Four capture conference honors

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Presidents' Athletic Conference honored four Grove City College spring sports athletes Monday afternoon with weekly awards after their respective performances last week. 

Senior Isaac DeMan (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) earned Player of the Week in men's tennis while junior defender Nate Clark (Oakwood, Ohio/Oakwood) captured Defensive Player of the Week distinction in men's lacrosse. 

In women's lacrosse, junior attack Taylor Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) earned Offensive Player of the Week. Freshman shortstop Lily Meidl (Pataskala, Ohio/Licking Heights) is this week's Newcomer of the Week in softball.

DeMan went a combined 4-0 last week in conference play to help Grove City sew up the No. 2 seed in this week's conference tournament. Wednesday against Saint Vincent, he teamed with sophomore Ryan Kirkpatrick (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) for a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles and then picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles.

Two days later against Westminster, DeMan earned a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles after teaming with Kirkpatrick for a shutout win at second doubles.

DeMan owns a 7-4 record in singles play this year along with a 9-3 mark in doubles competition. His 16 total wins are tied for first on the team.

Clark helped Grove City to a 3-0 week last week with his defensive work. Wednesday night, he caused three turnovers in a 28-1 win at Bethany. Clark scored in the win and also picked up three ground balls.

Saturday, Clark caused two turnovers in a 14-13 overtime win over St. Mary's (Md.), then had a caused turnover in Grove City's 25-2 conference win over Thiel.

Clark ranks third on the Wolverines with 15 caused turnovers. He has added two goals, two assists and 28 ground balls while starting all 17 games this year. 

Blythe recorded three goals and added four assists Wednesday in Grove City's lone game of the week, a 22-0 conference win at Bethany. Blythe posted the first goal of the game and scored on all three of her shots at Bethany.

She leads the conference with 44 assists. She has 21 goals this year, giving her a team-leading 65 points.

Meidl went 8 for 12 at the plate in Grove City's 3-2 week against conference foes. She opened the week by going 2 for 2 in the nightcap of last Monday's doubleheader against Chatham. Two days later, Meidl went 2 for 3 with a run in the opener against Geneva. 

Meidl then had four hits in five at-bats Saturday as Grove City swept visiting Franciscan. Meidl is now hitting .425 (17 for 40) in 16 games (13 starts).

The Grove City men's tennis team will host a conference tournament semifinal Thursday afternoon. The men's lacrosse team visits Hiram at 7 p.m. Wednesday in conference action while Grove City's women's lacrosse team will host Otterbein at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The softball team will visit Geneva to complete a suspended game Tuesday at 5 p.m.
