WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team moved to 10-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by splitting a doubleheader Saturday at conference leader Washington & Jefferson (23-7, 13-3). Grove City (15-14) won the opener at Ross Memorial Park, 7-6, while W&J captured a 13-1 win in the nightcap.
Senior first baseman
Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) belted a pair of home runs in the opener to help pace Grove City's 10-hit attack. His solo homer in the third inning opened the scoring. Two innings later, he broke a 2-2 tie by launching a three-run clout that also scored senior second baseman
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and junior center fielder
David Chandler (Leesburg, Va./St. John's).Â
The lead grew to 6-2 later that inning as junior left fielder
Dan Luko (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) doubled and then scored on a subsequent double by junior right fielder
Caleb Backos (Troy, Mich./Bloomfield Christian).
Luko later scored on a seventh-inning single from junior catcher
Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour).Â
W&J scored three times in the eighth inning, then cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth. The Presidents had the tying run at third base with one but senior reliever
Corey Veverka (Twinsburg, Pa./Twinsburg) entered and closed the win. Veverka fanned Luke Alvarez, then forced a Seth Rosenfeld game-ending pop up.Â
Veverka's second save of the season preserved the win for senior pitcher
Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry). Lavrich struck out six men in seven innings. He allowed three runs and four hits.Â
Freshman
Caz Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) pitched 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.
Luko scored on an error in the first inning of Game Two, giving Grove City an early lead. W&J scored four times in the bottom of the first and added four more runs in the second frame.Â
Chandler went 3 for 3. Junior pitcher
Bryce Trischler (Mars, Pa./Shady Side Academy) started and allowed four earned runs in two innings. He took the defeat. Freshman
Cole Reber (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) pitched in relief during the third inning while classmate
Graham Romer (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) followed with three innings of relief. Romer allowed one run. Freshman
Jack Guiffre (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) pitched the sixth inning and allowed two runs.
The game stopped after 6 1/2 innings due to the conference's 10-run mercy rule.Â
Grove City will host Bethany at 1 p.m. Wednesday in a conference doubleheader.Â
