STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon and evening at Franciscan. Franciscan rallied for a 10-9 win in the opener while Grove City captured a 14-8 victory in the second game. The doubleheader began shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday and finished at 9:46 p.m. after multiple weather delays.
Grove City (14-13) bolted to a 12-0 lead in the nightcap. Junior left fielder
Dan Luko (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) doubled in senior second baseman
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) to highlight a five-run third inning for the Wolverines.
Freshman third baseman
Nick Remish (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) belted a two-run homer in the fourth inning while Sampson scored on a fifth-inning single from senior first baseman
Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny). Luko and Marinpetro scored Grove City's 11th and 12th runs when junior right fielder
Caleb Backos (Troy, Mich./Bloomfield Christian) cracked a two-run triple in the fifth.
Franciscan trimmed Grove City's lead to 13-8 in the sixth inning but Sampson scored an insurance run on a passed ball in the ninth inning.
Grove City finished with only seven hits in the nightcap as the Wolverines took advantage of 13 walks. Backos finished 2 for 4 with three runs scored. Luko and Sampson also scored three times.
Freshman pitcher
Wyatt Hopson (Middletown, Md./Middletown) earned the win by striking out eight men in five innings. He allowed five runs and six hits. Junior
Jack Houston (Vienna, Va./Vienna) recorded one out in the sixth inning. Freshman
Graham Romer (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) earned his second save of the season by throwin 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Romer fanned four men.
Franciscan scored three times in the bottom of the ninth inning to win Game One. Freshman shortstop Kyle Rhinberger (Perry, Ohio/Perry) paced Grove City's 14-hit attack by going 4 for 5 with three runs batted in. Sophomore left fielder
Braeden Coyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) doubled twice while going 3 for 4 with three runs scored.
Remish homered and singled while Backos doubled. Sampson went 3 for 6.
Freshman pitcher
Noah Mackie (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) started and pitched the first seven innings. He allowed five earned runs while striking out four. Romer allowed one run in one inning. Sophomore
Corey Veverka (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) took the setback after allowing a pair of runs.
Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson for a conference doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
