Late rally falls short in Florida

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a 5-4 verdict Wednesday afternoon to Illinois College in Spring Break action at the RussMatt Invitational.

Grove City (3-5) trailed 5-2 after eight innings before battling back. Freshman catcher Johnny Reyes (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) led off with a double, moved to third on an error and scored on a groundout by sophomore DH Kallen Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley).

Sophomore center fielder Braeden Coyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) cut the lead to 5-4 when his single drove in junior shortstop Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour). Coyle went 3 for 3 to pace the Wolverines.

The Wolverines trailed 2-0 in the fifth when Reyes drove in freshman third baseman Nick Remish (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) with a groundout. In the sixth inning, Remish's sacrifice fly scored junior right fielder Caleb Backos (Troy, Mich./Bloomfield Christian).

Freshman pitcher Noah Mackie (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) allowed two runs in a season-high seven innings. He struck out six. Freshman reliever Caz Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) pitched the eighth inning and took the defeat.
