Grove City sweeps Geneva

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 4-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by taking both ends of a conference doubleheader Monday afternoon from visiting Geneva. The Wolverines won the opener in seven innings, 14-4, then captured a 5-1 victory in the nightcap at Jack Behringer Field.

Grove City (9-10) broke open Game One by scoring 10 runs on only four hits. Freshman third baseman Nick Remish (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) cracked a two-run single to give Grove City a 7-2 lead while junior catcher Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) launched a grand slam three batters later to give the Wolverines a 12-2 advantage.

Weber went 3 for 4 with three runs scored while Remish added a double as part of a 2-for-3 outing. Freshman shortstop Kyle Rhineberger (Perry, Ohio/Perry) finished 2 for 4. Remish, senior second baseman Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry), junior right fielder Caleb Backos (Troy, Mich./Bloomfield Christian) and junior center fielder David Chandler (Leesburg, Va./St. John's) all scored twice.

Grove City finished with nine hits as the Wolverines capitalized on seven walks, three hit batsmen and three errors.

Freshman pitcher Noah Mackie (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) secured his first collegiate win by throwing a complete game. Mackie allowed two earned runs and six hits in seven innings. He struck out three and walked two men.

The Wolverines scored all five runs in the first inning of the nightcap. Junior left fielder Dan Luko (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) blasted a bases-clearing triple that scored Chandler, Remish and senior first baseman Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny). A throwing error allowed Luko to score the fourth run of the inning.

Sophomore DH Kallen Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) reached after being hit by a pitch and immediately scored on Weber's double into the left field corner.

Remish went 2 for 4. Grove City finished with six hits.

Freshman pitcher Caz Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) earned the victory by allowing one run in 5 2/3 innings. Ostrowski, who made his first start of the season, struck out four and allowed six hits.

Freshman Graham Romer (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) retired all four men he faced in relief. Lavrich closed out the win with two scoreless innings. He struck out three.

The Wolverines will host Waynesburg University in a conference doubleheader Thursday at 1 p.m.
