DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Grove City College baseball team rallied from a 13-6 deficit Monday afternoon to forge a 14-14 tie against Clark (Mass.) at the RussMatt Invitational. However, Clark scored nine times over the final two innings to to secure a 23-14 win over the Wolverines (3-4).
Senior first baseman
Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) tied the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, his second clout of the game. Clark scored five times in the top of the eighth inning, however, and then added four more runs in the ninth inning to sew up the win.
Marinpetro's grand slam in the second inning gave Grove City a 6-2 lead. Clark countered with a nine-run outburst in the top of the fourth inning. Clark led 13-6 in the fifth inning but Grove City then rallied for six runs. Junior left fielder
David Chandler (Leesburg, Va./St. John's) highlighted the outburst with a two-run double while junior right fielder
Caleb Backos (Troy, Mich./Bloomfield Christian) followed with a run-scoring single.
Backos also doubled while amassing a career-best four hits. Marinpetro finished 3 for 5 with three runs scored and six runs batted in. Freshman catcher
Johnny Reyes (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) doubled and singled while Chandler finished 2 for 5.
Junior pitcher
Bryce Trischler (Mars, Pa./Shady Side Academy) started and allowed five earned runs in three innings. Junior
Jack Houston (Vienna, Va./Vienna), freshman
Jack Guiffre (Farmington, N.Y./Victory), freshman
Cole Reber (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) and sophomore
Corey Veverka (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) all pitched in relief. Reber absorbed the loss.
Grove City returns to action Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. against Illinois College.
