GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team grabbed sole possession of the Presidents' Athletic Conference's North Division by pulling out a 64-54 home win Wednesday night over Allegheny in the Grove City College Arena.
Senior guard
Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) fired in 22 points for the Wolverines (14-8, 8-5) while senior center
Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) added 19 as Grove City rallied in the fourth quarter for the victory.
Grove City trailed 44-41 after three quarters but took the lead for good with six minutes left when Sherrerd scored the second of her three straight field goals. Hasley's layup gave the Wolverines a 54-49 lead with four minutes remaining.
Sherrerd and Hasley both added field goals in the final two minutes to put the Wolverines ahead 58-51. Hasley then went 5 of 6 at the foul line in the closing moments to seal the win.
Grove City jumped out to a 16-9 lead after one quarter. Allegheny shot 11 of 15 (73 percent) in the second quarter to forge a 33-33 tie by halftime.
For the game, Allegheny shot 42 percent (23 of 55) while Grove City finished the game 22 of 75 (29 percent). However, Grove City owned a 15-0 edge in second chance points. The Wolverines collected 19 offensive rebounds while allowing Allegheny to obtain only four offensive rebounds.
Overall, Grove City outrebounded the Gators, 47-40. Sherrerd finished with a season-high dozen rebounds, giving her a third double-double this season. Junior forward
Bethany Thompson (Exeter Township, Pa./High Point Baptist) added six rebounds.
Grove City finished with eight turnovers while Allegheny committed 22 turnovers. Grove City amassed a 16-3 edge in points off turnovers.
Hasley and sophomore forward
Kailey Devlin (Turbotville, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) both had three steals. Thompson finished with four assists.
Isabella Antonacci led Allegheny (10-12, 7-6) with 17 points.
Grove City owns a one-game lead on Allegheny with three games remaining in the regular season. The Wolverines close their home schedule Saturday at 1 p.m. against South Division entry Waynesburg University. The Yellow Jackets are 8-5 in the conference and own a six-game winning streak.
