GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Four Grove City College men's basketball players scored in double figures Wednesday night to lift the Wolverines to a wire-to-wire 77-65 win over visiting Allegheny in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.
Senior forward
Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) poured in 28 points on 12-of-15 from the field while senior guard
Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) went 6 for 6 from behind the three-point line as part of a 20-point outing.
Junior guard
Colton Martin (Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg) went 6 of 9 from the field while scoring 13 points. Junior center
Austin Johncour (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) pumped in a dozen points.
Grove City (9-13, 6-7) jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the first half as Randle hit a jumper and a three-pointer while Johncour, Christenson and junior forward
Caleb Haller (Delaware, Ohio/Marion Hawks) also scored from the field.
Christenson's layup with 8:48 left in the half put Grove City up 24-13, which marked the Wolverines' largest lead of the first half. Allegheny whittled the lead to 29-28 but Grove City closed the first half on a 7-0 run. Christenson's three-pointer sparked the late rally while Johncour and Martin followed with field goals.
Grove City maintained a double-digit lead for much of the second half. Allegheny trimmed the lead to 68-59 with 3:30 remaining but Martin's three-pointer and Christenson's jumper in the lane pushed the margin back to 13.
Grove City finished the game 33 of 62 (53 percent) from the field. Allegheny shot 42 percent (22 of 53). Grove City also recorded a season-high 25 assists as a team. Haller handed out a career-high eight assists. Christenson and Randle both had four assists while junior center
Owen Wolf (South Lyon, Mich./Firebirds H.E.A.) assisted on three field goals.
Randle also had three steals. Grove City finished the game with 12 turnovers. Allegheny had 11 turnovers.
Martin and Randle each recorded eight rebounds as Grove City amassed a 41-25 edge on the glass. Johncour recorded six rebounds. Grove City had 15 offensive rebounds whereas Allegheny had 17 rebounds at the defensive end.
Ryan Lang led Allegheny (9-13, 7-6) with 27 points.
Christenson became the 12th player in Grove City program history to score 1,200 or more points. He now has 1,221 points, which ranks eighth in program history. He moved up five spots on Grove City's all-time scoring list Wednesday night.
Christenson's 424 points are tied for 16th on Grove City's single-season scoring list. Ryan Eller also scored 424 points 22 years ago. Christenson is the 19th man in program history to surpass the 400-point mark in one season.
Grove City and Allegheny split their regular season series. Allegheny won in Meadville last month, 65-59. The all-time series is now tied 77-77.
The Wolverines close their regular season home schedule Saturday at 3 p.m. when they host Waynesburg University.
