Brooke McCoy (Irwin, Pa./Hempfield) fired in a career-high 19 points Wednesday night while senior center
Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) tallied 16 points to help the Grove City College women's basketball team capture a 78-64 win over visiting Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference North Division action at the Grove City College Arena.
Senior guard
Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) added a dozen points for the Wolverines, who rallied from a 20-8 deficit in the first quarter.
Grove City faced that 12-point margin with three minutes remaining in the first quarter before embarking on a 29-6 run over the final 13 minutes of the half. Junior guard
Bethany Thompson (Exeter Township, Pa./High Point Baptist) ignited the comeback with a three-pointer while Hasley also drained a three-pointer. McCoy's layup whittled the lead to 20-17 with 1:39 left in the opening quarter.
Sherrerd's jumper cut Westminster's lead to 22-19 by the end of the first quarter. The Wolverines then took a 25-24 lead in the second quarter when sophomores
Alexis Hudson (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) and
Kailey Devlin (Turbotville, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) converted consecutive three-pointers.
McCoy followed with five straight points, pushing the lead to 30-24. Hasley's transition layup and three-pointer in the final minute of the half put Grove City up 37-26 at halftime.
Grove City's lead swelled to 59-39 in the third quarter. Junior guard
Sarah Pifer (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) drilled a pair of three-pointers in the first six minutes of the period while Sherrerd scored twice in the paint. Devlin, junior guard
Alexa McDole (Evans City, Pa./Mars) and freshman guard
Haley Mach (Hillsdale, Mich./Jonesville) also recorded layups during the run.
Westminster trimmed Grove City's lead to 61-45 by the end of the third quarter. The Titans eventually pulled to within 69-59 in the fourth quarter but Sherrerd sealed the win by scoring eight straight points.
Grove City (9-3, 3-0) shot 40 percent (29 of 73) from the field for the game. Westminster (4-8, 1-2) finished 23 of 65 (35 percent) on field goal attempts.
Sherrerd and Thompson both pulled in seven rebounds to help the Wolverines attain a 45-33 edge on the glass. Sherrerd also had four assists while Devlin and Hasley both assisted on three field goals each.
Each team had 12 turnovers. Grace Cano led Westminster with 13 points.
Grove City will host Franciscan at 1 p.m. Saturday in Presidents' Athletic Conference interdivisional play. It will be the first of Grove City's six games against the conference's South Division.
