GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 65-59 decision Wednesday night to visiting Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference North Division action at the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City trailed by as many 17 in the first half before closing to within 57-54 with four minutes remaining. However, Westminster's D.J. Harrell scored in the paint on the Titans' next possession, boosting the lead to five. Harrell, who scored a game-high 27 points, helped seal the win by going 6 for 6 at the foul line down the stretch.
The Wolverines trailed 44-30 at halftime and faced a 54-42 deficit midway through the second half. Junior forward
Caleb Haller (Delaware, Ohio/Marion Hawks) and sophomore guard
Anderson Skelton (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) cut the lead in half by hitting back-to-back three-pointers.
Senior guard
Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) followed with a dunk, closing the gap to 55-50. Randle scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half. Senior forward
Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) led Grove City (4-8, 1-2) with 17 points.
Grove City finished the game 23 of 62 (37 percent) from the field while Westminster shot 38 percent (21 of 55). Grove City held the Titans to five field goals in the second half. Westminster went 5 of 22 (23 percent) over the final 20 minutes.
Grove City accumulated a 40-34 rebound advantage. Christenson, junior center
Austin Johncour (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) and junior guard
Colton Martin (Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg) all pulled in seven rebounds.
Christenson tallied five assists. Freshman forward
Josh Book (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) added three assists. Grove City had 12 turnovers while Westminster had eight turnovers.
The Wolverines will host Franciscan at 3 p.m. Saturday in conference action.
