GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team shot a season-best 61 percent from the field Saturday afternoon on the way to a 77-62 home win over Franciscan (10-3, 2-2) in Presidents' Athletic Conference interdivisional action at the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City (5-8, 2-2) also held the South Division co-leaders to 30 percent (18 of 60) shooting from the field Saturday.
Four Wolverines scored in double figures, led by a 24-point outing from senior forward
Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity). Christenson went 8 of 12 from the field Saturday. Junior guard
Colton Martin (Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg) added a season-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting while senior guard
Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) and junior center
Austin Johncour (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) both posted 12 points. Johncour went 5 for 6 from the field.
Grove City closed the first half on a 9-2 run to take a 43-33 lead after 20 minutes. Martin's transition layup sparked the run. Junior forward
Caleb Haller (Delaware, Ohio/Marion Hawks) bombed in a three-pointer to give Grove City a 39-31 lead. Back-to-back Christenson jumpers pushed the lead into double figures before the intermission.
Martin added a season-high nine rebounds to help Grove City attain a 45-28 edge on the glass. Christenson and Randle each had seven rebounds while Haller, Johncour and freshman forward
Josh Book (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) all had five rebounds.
Grove City committed 17 turnovers while Franciscan had 11 turnovers.
Sawyer Butler led Franciscan with 15 points. He entered the game as the top scorer in NCAA Division III, averaging 28.3 points per game.
Saturday's game is the only regular season meeting between the teams this year. Grove City plays each of its North Division opponents twice and plays one game against each of the six South Division teams.
Grove City is the first conference team to shoot 60 percent or better from the field in a game this year. It's the first time since February 18, 2017 that Grove City has made 60 or more percent of its field goal attempts. The Wolverines shot 62.5 percent (35 of 56) in an 86-73 win at Bethany that day.
The Wolverines return to North Division action Wednesday at 8 p.m. when they visit Allegheny.
