Grove City stays atop North Division

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team maintained a share of first place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference's North Division by earning a 72-52 home win Wednesday night over North Division rival Hiram at the Grove City College Arena. 

Senior center Meredith Sherrerd paced the Wolverines (12-6, 6-3) with 15 points while senior guard Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Sophomore forward Alexis Hudson (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) added 13 points in Grove City's balanced offensive attack. 

Grove City led 35-29 at halftime, then held Hiram to 7 of 30 (23 percent) shooting from the field in the second half. That included a 2-for-16 performance in the fourth quarter. 

Grove City closed the game on a 22-8 run over the final 10-plus minutes. Sherrerd's short jumper with 20 seconds left in the third quarter gave Grove City a 52-44 lead after 30 minutes. Grove City then outscored Hiram (5-13, 2-7) in the fourth quarter 20-8.

Sophomore forward Kailey Devlin (Turbotville, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) ignited the fourth quarter run with consecutive field goals while Sherrerd's jumper in the paint pushed the lead to 58-44. Hasley's jumper and subsequent three-pointer midway through the period extended the advantage to 65-46. 

The Wolverines finished 30 of 65 (46 percent) from the field. Hasley secured six rebounds while Devlin, Hudson and junior forward Bethany Thompson (Exeter Township, Pa./High Point Baptist) all had five rebounds. Hiram held a 41-40 edge in rebounds.

Devlin and Sherrerd both dished out five assists for Grove City, which committed only 11 turnovers. Grove City forced 20 Hiram turnovers. Junior guard Alexa McDole (Evans City, Pa./Mars) recorded five steals while Thompson had three thefts.

Sarah Seaman led Hiram with 22 points. 

Grove City is tied for first atop the North Division with Allegheny. Allegheny downed Geneva in North Division play Wednesday night, 79-64. The Wolverines will host Allegheny in the penultimate home game of the regular season February 11.

The Wolverines will host South Division co-leader Washington & Jefferson at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Grove City College Arena.
