Big 2nd half leads to home win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- A 55-point outburst in the second half helped vault the Grove City College men's basketball team to a come-from-behind 80-68 home win Wednesday night over Hiram in Presidents' Athletic Conference North Division action at the Grove City College Arena. 

Grove City trailed 12-2 early and faced a 17-6 deficit midway through the first half. The Wolverines pulled to within 30-25 by halftime and then surged ahead in the second half. 

Senior forward Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) fired in 20 of his game-high 23 points in the second half for Grove City while senior guard Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) posted 18 points. Junior guard Colton Martin (Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg) scored all 17 of his points in the second half and junior forward Caleb Haller (Delaware, Ohio/Marion Hawks) scored a career-high 10 points to give Grove City a quartet of double-digit scorers.

Hiram opened up a 34-27 lead early in the second half but Haller and Martin drained consecutive three-pointers. Christenson gave Grove City its first lead of the night, 35-34, with a baseline jumper. Grove City then took the lead for good six minutes into the second half when junior center Austin Johncour (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) recorded a three-point play.

Christenson scored eight straight points for Grove City, pushing the lead to 50-42. Grove City took its largest lead of the second half, 73-61, when Martin followed a three-pointer with another jumper. 

The Wolverines went 19 of 21 (90 percent) at the foul line in the second half and finished 20 of 24 (83 percent) overall at the foul line. Hiram went 8 of 16 at the foul line for the game, including a 4-for-11 performance over the final 20 minutes. 

Hiram shot 26 of 51 (51 percent) from the field while Grove City went 26 of 66 (39 percent).

Grove City grabbed 23 offensive rebounds as a team while Hiram had 19 defensive rebounds. Overall, Grove City amassed a 46-26 edge on the glass. Randle collected eight rebounds while Johncour had seven boards. 

Christenson and freshman forward Josh Book (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) both had four assists. Randle and sophomore forward Liam Conklin (Enfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) each had three assists. Randle also had three steals. 

Grove City forced 13 Hiram turnovers. The Wolverines turned over the basketball eight times. 

Brock Makrancy led Hiram (5-13, 1-8) with 13 points. 

Christenson now has 1,143 career points, moving him into 21st place in program history. Bart Niemeyer (1958-62) is 20th with 1,145 points while James Wells (2017-20) is 19th with 1,147 points. 

Grove City (7-11, 4-5) will host Washington & Jefferson at 3 p.m. Saturday in Presidents' Athletic Conference interdivisional play.
