Grove City downs Thiel in North clash

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior center Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) posted a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double Wednesday night while sophomore forward Kailey Devlin (Turbotville, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) scored a career-high 13 points to help the Grove City College women's basketball team to a 58-39 home win over Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference North Division action at the Grove City College Arena. 

Grove City jumped out to a 23-4 lead after one quarter, then pushed the lead to 29-9 in the second period. Junior guard Alexa McDole (Evans City, Pa./Mars) helped ignite the start by scoring eight points in the opening quarter as Grove City shot 9 of 17 (53 percent) from the field over the first 10 minutes.

Senior guard Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) added eight points for Grove City (11-5, 5-2). She added three assists and three steals.

Junior guard Bethany Thompson (Exeter Township, Pa./High Point Baptist) added seven rebounds to help Grove City earn a 49-39 edge on the glass. Grove City held Thiel to 23 percent (14 of 61) shooting from the floor.

Thiel (5-11, 0-7) trimmed Grove City's lead to 34-23 by halftime, then closed to within 42-34 by the end of the third quarter. Grove City broke open the game with a 12-3 run over the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, however. Devlin scored the first six points of the run, then capped the outburst with a three-pointer. Sherrerd added a field goal and a free throw in the run.

Grove City committed 13 turnovers. Thiel had 16 turnovers. The Wolverines shot 20 of 59 (34 percent) on field goals. 

Issy Green led Thiel with 12 points.

Grove City will visit South Division leader Saint Vincent (7-0 PAC) in interdivisional conference action Saturday at 4 p.m.
